The liner notes are by
Irwin Zucker:
As befits their name, The Surfaris like to travel. And, luckily, they have been
moving in the right circles. Here, the
popular teen band take a tour of the charts, booking some of the top hits of the 1960's and fashioning them in a
style that radiates personality, showmanship
and excitement. Naturally, for The Surfaris, at least, the most memorable stop on this musical journey is "wipe
Out," which they created. It was a splashing,
splintering success, taking a path into the Top Ten and thus cueing this collection. The Surfaris have been on the
go, go, go since mid-1962 when they first
started testing - and pleasing - audiences in and around their home-town, Glendora, California. Unlike many bands
that feature surf music but whose members
do not surf, The Surfaris are all surf-goers. This, they feel, gives them a sense of authenticity in playing the
new range in teen music. In this album, too,
they vary their repertoire to appeal to all devotees of the teen beat. Youngest of the
group is Jim Pash, 14, who plays saxophone. All the guitarist - Jim Fuller, Bob Berryhill and Pat
Connolly - are 16. The "old man" is drummer Ron
Wilson, 18, who often shakes loose with a 20-minute solo. It's a fun-loving team. The band's manager, Dale Smallin,
is oft-regarded as a "sixth member," and
is held in high esteem. Y'see it was Dale's hyena-like laugh on the "Wipe Out" hit that started the whole thing.
Dale's vocal gyrations are fancily showcased
again on the "Tequila" selection. Sample it! Although the road to success has been paved with good fortune, the
boys feel they have much to learn on the
course ahead. Their goal is to entertain - just for you! |

The band name THE SURFARIS has been moved from below the center to above it under the album title WIPE OUT. The font has been changed and enlarged and/or bolded. This is easiest to see in the DLP 3535 and SIDE 1 text. Instead of M 55,965, it now says LPM 55,965. The song titles have all been capitalized. The writers credits have been moved below the title of each song. The Dot Records bottom label information has been changed to include the Paramount Pictures Corporation. As Paramount acquired Dot in 1957, and not 1963, it is unknown why the text was changed here. They also changed the text on other LPs they released at this time, for example, Sugar Shack (DLP 25,545), by Jimmy Glimmer & The Fireballs. |
